Asia is the world’s largest and most populous
continent. It covers 8.6 percent of the earth’s total
surface area and contains more than 60 percent of the
world’s current human population. The term Asian is a
race defined as “people who have origins in the original
peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia or the South
Asia/Indian subcontinent. Asian American ancestors
migrated from countries, such as Chinese, Taiwanese,
Filipino, Korean, Japanese, Malaysian, India,
Indonesian, Vietnamese, Pakistani, Laotian, Thai, etc.,
that are part of the following five sub regions (50)
countries: Central Asia (5), Eastern Asia(7), Southern
Asia (9), South Eastern Asia (11), and Western Asia
(18). The Pacific Islands contains an estimated 20,000
to 30,000 islands, which are sometimes collectively
called Oceania, and are traditionally grouped into three
areas: Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia.
U.S. Census data indicate that there are more than 13
million U.S. residents of Asian origin, comprising about
5 percent of the total population. Census projections
expect the number to increase to more than 33 million by
2050.
