Befuddled At Beal….

MAJ Blackmore Dear Dietitian,
I have heard so much positives and negatives about the low carb – high protein diets that I just don’t know what to believe. My friend tried it and lost weight quickly just eating mostly meat, eggs and other protein. Is that considered a healthy way to lose weight?
Befuddled at Beal AFB.

Dear Befuddled:

Excluding important food groups like grains, fruits and vegetables is not a healthy way to lose weight.  These food groups are the foundation of a balanced diet and provide fiber, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that your body needs.  I recommend a well-balanced diet rich in whole grains and a variety fruit and vegetables as well as lean sources of protein to include beans and lentils.  Adopting healthy eating and exercise habits that you can maintain over time will promote weight loss and improve your overall wellness.

Signed,
MAJ Blackmore
