AAFES Name Brand Fast Food Operations Continue to Expand with the Opening of Korea’s Fourth Subway Restaurant

DALLAS – Army & Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) customers in Korea have recently gotten more Name Brand Fast Food choices -- especially those who want to “eat fresh.”  Two Subway sandwich shops opened this month to the delight of customers. The first opened Feb. 3 in the Osan Air Base Shopping Mall and another followed the next day at the Camp Carroll Food Court.

The new restaurants join two existing AAFES Korea Subways, located inside Seoul’s Dragon Hill Lodge and Camp Humphrey’s Zoeckler Station.

“The line starts promptly at 10 a.m. and doesn’t slow down until closing time at 10 p.m.,” said Lee Holloway, Korea Central Exchange General Manager. “The Osan Subway staff made more that 1,000 Subway sandwiches their first day and have continued this trend ever since. Customers from all over the entire base come to experience the new taste of "home" in the Osan Shopping Mall, and to witness the sixth name brand, quick-service restaurant to open here in less than three months.”

Osan’s food court, the largest in Korea with a seating capacity of 588, also hosts Captain D’s seafood, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Charley’s Steakery and for desert; Baskin Robbins.

“Our military members and their family were so happy with having Subway on Osan. They really enjoy Subway sandwiches,” said Osan Assistant Food Court Manager Yim, Hak-Ku. “They commented that it is the number one sandwich in the world.”

Yu, Ki-chan, Food Business Manager for Korea Capital and Southern Exchange said AAFES customers at Camp Carroll were just as excited to have Subway in their neighborhood.

"Wow, is the reaction Camp Carroll Food Court customers are expressing as they take their first bite of a Subway sandwich on this remote Korean Army installation,” he said. “AAFES managers and associates work together to serve the long green line of customers.”

The Camp Carroll Food Court, co-located with a Morale Welfare and Recreation Club has long enjoyed a Burger King restaurant, and recent renovations have added Popeyes Chicken, Pizza Hut, Baskin Robbins and the new Subway.

If loaves of bread are any indication, the customers at the Camp Carroll Food Court are enjoying the healthy alternatives Subway offers. In fact, in its first 10 days of operation, the Carroll Subway staff baked 3,900 loaves of bread.

“Subway has been a real shot in the arm for the Carroll community,” said Chester Hires, Exchange Business Manager for Korea’s Area IV. “Our commander is very happy with the facility and customers are excited with the changes. Sales at the food court are up almost 28 percent for the month.  And, although the managers are exhausted, they are happy with the sales and product of Subway.”

AAFES currently operates 58 Subway restaurants across the globe including 25 locations in Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom. “Subway is a restaurant brand that is well received in the military community,” said Richard Sheff, AAFES’ Vice President of Food and Theater Division. AAFES’ aggressive expansion of Name Brand Fast Food facilities will continue throughout 2005 as it plans to open 19 additional Subway restaurants in 2005”.
