- PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
This method is designed to measure the ability of a fabric (which
has been treated with soil release finish) to release stains during home laundering. This
test method can also be used for evaluating effectiveness of laundry detergents and
cleaners.
- PRINCIPLE:
The various types of stains, as requested, are applied on the garments.
After laundering, the degree of remaining stains are visually evaluated by comparing
against AATCC standard replica.
- REFERENCE:
AATCC Test Method 130-2000, Soil Release: Oily Stain Release Method.
- APPARATUS:
4.1 Various types of stains
4.2 Washer and dryer - see 8.1
4.3 1993 AATCC Standard Reference Detergent - see 8.2
4.4 AATCC Stain Release Replica or 3M Stain Release Rating Scale, see 8.3
4.5 Ballast of 92 x 92 cm (36 x 36 in.) hemmed pieces of bleached 100% cotton sheeting
or 50% polyester and 50% cotton, bleached and mercerized poplin or 50% polyester and
50%cotton mercerized plain weave - see 8.3
4.6 White Textile Blotting Paper - see 8.4
- PROCEDURE:
5.1 Use 3 specimens (garments or fabric swatches) and condition the
specimens for a minimum of 4 hours at 21° +/- 1C (70° +/- 2F) temperature and 65 +/- 2% RH
prior to application of stains. The fabric swatches should be at least 38 +/- 1 x 38 +/- 1
cm (15.0 +/- 0.4 x 15.0 +/- 0.4 in.).
5.2 Place the specimen flat on a single thickness of white blotting paper on a smooth
surface.
5.3 Draw as many approximately 51 mm (2 in.) diameter circles on the specimen as the
number of stains requested.
5.4 Apply the stains in the approximate center of the circles, such as to cover the
area of the circle.
5.5 Allow stains to remain undisturbed for 15 minutes.
5.6 Using a spatula, remove the excess stains.
5.7 Fill washer to the high level with water at the temperature listed on the care
label.
5.8 Add 100 +/- 1 g of 1993 AATCC Standard Reference Detergent.
5.9 Place specimens and ballast in the washer, making a total load equal to 1.80 +/-
0.07 k (4.00 +/- 0.15 lb.)
5.10 Wash and dry the specimens as directed by the care label.
5.11 Remove specimens from dryer.
- EVALUATION:
Compare the residual stains on the specimens with the stains in the AATCC
standard stain release replica and assign a grade as follows:
| GRADE |
|
Standard |
| Grade 5 |
Stain equivalent to Standard |
Stain 5 |
| Grade 4 |
Stain equivalent to Standard |
Stain 4 |
| Grade 3 |
Stain equivalent to Standard |
Stain 3 |
| Grade 2 |
Stain equivalent to Standard |
Stain 2 |
| Grade 1 |
Stain equivalent to Standard |
Stain 1 |
Grade 5 represents the best stain removal and Grade 1 the poorest stain removal.
- REPORT:
Calculate the average of 4 grades for each fabric (2 judgments on each of 2
specimens) to the nearest 0.1. This is the unit of measure for this test method.
