- PURPOSE AND SCOPE:
To determine resistance of colored fabrics to changes in shade caused by flat abrasion.
Poor dye penetration in fabrics can cause localized color change which may result in
customer dissatisfaction.
- PRINCIPLE:
Fabric is mounted over inflated diaphragm under controlled air pressure and rubbed
against an emery abradant mounted on a weighted head. Change in color is evaluated by
comparison with the Gray Scale for Color Change.
This test method produces, in an accelerated manner, a localized color change similar
To that produced on some garments over relatively long periods of actual wear in which The
garment is exposed to relatively severe abrasive action.

- APPARATUS AND MATERIALS:
4.1 Universal Wear Tester, Model CS-22C - See 8.1
4.2 Rubber diaphragm
4.3 "O" emery polishing paper, 38 x
228 mm (1.5 x 9.0 in.) - See 8.2
4.4 Vacuum cleaner
4.5 AATCC Gray Scale for Color Change (with intermediate steps) - See 8.3
- PROCEDURE:
5.1 Conduct test in standard atmosphere for testing.
5.2 Place unused strip of "O" emery abrasive paper beneath abradant plate and
clamp at each end.
5.3 Place specimen face up over diaphragm to that fabric is free from wrinkles and
attach clamping ring. A specimen is approximately 100 mm (4 in.) in diameter.
5.4 Set air pressure on diaphragm to 20.68 kPa (3 psi) and place 1361 gram (3 lb.) load
on balanced head.
5.5 Engage rotation mechanism of clamp causing multidirectional abrasion.
5.6 Gently lower upper carriage with "O" emery paper until it contacts
specimen and push the "start" button.
5.7 Allow to oscillate for 100 cycles and stop the machine.
5.8 Remove specimen from machine and vacuum to remove fiber and abradant residue.
5.9 Hand rinse specimen in clear lukewarm water
at 38°C (100°F). Blot between towels to remove excess water.
5.10. Place specimen face down between two
pieces of clean white cloth and press with hand iron set at approximately
149°C (300°F) until dry.
5.11. If abnormal wear pattern is obtained - repeat the test.
- EVALUATION:
Examine specimen under good lighting condition and classify color change by comparing
the Gray Scale for Color Change. Record lowest rating observed for each specimen in
accordance with the following scale:

- REPORT:
Report the color change in terms of grade, as an average for three specimens.
