LABORATORY TEST METHOD NO. H-3

DISPERSION- PERSONAL HYGIENE PRODUCTS

1. PURPOSE:

To measure the ability of personal hygiene products to allow migration of fluid. The ability of a specimen to let fluid or moisture migrate or disperse within itself is directly related to the user feeling dry. The higher the dispersion value, the better a specimen is.

2. PRINCIPLE:

A predetermined amount of solution is poured into the center of a specimen and allowed to travel or disperse within the specimen to determine the amount of dispersion.

3. APPARATUS AND MATERIALS:

3.1 One 100 by 100 by 25 mm (4 by 4 by 1 in.) lucite cylinder block with a 25 mm (1 in.) diameter opening in the center.

3.2 Dyed 1% saline solution at 38°C  (100°F).

3.3 A measuring cylinder with a capacity of at least 25 ml.

3.4 Steel ruler measuring 30 cm (12 in.) in length.

3.5 Timer.

4. PROCEDURE:

4.1 Place lucite block in center of the specimen.

4.2 Steadily pour 20 ml of dyed saline solution into the cylinder block and allow the solution to completely enter the cover sheet.

4.3 Remove cylinder block and let the specimen stand for two minutes..

4.4 After two minutes, remove the top layer of the specimen and expose the embossed fluff/core.

5. EVALUATION:

Measure the longest dimensions of the stain in mm. The higher the dispersion value, the better the specimen.

6. REPORT

Report amount of dispersion in mm.
