Army and Air Force Exchange
Service
The Army and Air Force Exchange Service (AAFES) is a
joint organization under the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force. Its worldwide
headquarters is in Dallas, TX. AAFES mission is two fold:
- To provide quality merchandise and services to active duty, National
Guard, reserve members, military retires, and their family members, at uniformly low
prices.
- To generate reasonable earnings for the support of Army and Air Force
morale, welfare and recreation programs (often called MWR).
Although AAFES is a federal organization, it is a non-appropriated
fund instrumentality that does not rely on tax dollars appropriated by Congress for major
support. AAFES operates almost exclusively with funds generated from its business
income.
The commander of AAFES is a Major General responsible to a board of
directors that is established by the secretaries of the Army and the Air Force.
Subordinate commands control operations in Europe and the Pacific Rim.
AAFES employs thousands of associates in a number of countries
worldwide and operates more than 10,500 activities in the following businesses:
- Retail Stores

- Class Six Package Stores
- Video Rental
- Movie Theaters
- Catalog Services
- Concessions
