To determine the weight of textile, plastic sheeting or film, and paper products.
PRINCIPLE:
Specimens of known area are prepared, conditioned, and weighed.
REFERENCE:
3.1 ASTM D 3776/D 377M-09ae1, Standard Test Method for Mass Per Unit Area (Weight) of Fabric.
3.2 ASTM D 685-93(2002), Standard Practice for Conditioning Paper and Paper Products for Testing.
APPARATUS:
4.1 Precision scale that can weigh as low as 100th of a gram, such as Mettler, AE-200
4.2 Cutting die, 81 x 77 mm (3.2 x 3.02 in.)
PROCEDURE:
5.1 Using the cutting die, cut out three specimens from different areas of a sample unit.
5.2 Condition the specimens for a minimum of 2 hours.

5.3 Weigh each specimen to the nearest 1/100 of a gram. To convert this weight into ozs./sq. yd., multiply it by 5. To convert this weight into grams/sq. meters, multiply it by 169.525.
REPORT:
Report the average results of three specimens either in ozs./sq. yds. or grams/sq. meters.
