This memorial honors all The Exchange employees, whether they are local nationals, third-country nationals or Americans. The only U.S. associate who has been killed in the line of action is Darren Braswell, who was killed in 2006 when the Blackhawk helicopter in which he was riding went down in Iraq. Five have been wounded – Sarah Briggs, Brian Sonntag, Bety Desil, Rebecca Pember and Maria Marek – and have received the Defense Department’s Defense of Freedom medal, the civilian equivalent of the Purple Heart. Several local and third-country nationals have been wounded or killed in the line of duty. In The Exchange's 119-year history, there have been no other documented cases of associates in deployed situations who were wounded or killed by hostile fire.

We honor these brave civilians who chose to work alongside our men and women in uniform and put themselves at risk in order to bring a little touch of home to our troops.
