As a military command with a retail mission, the Exchange, the Department of Defense’s oldest and largest retailer, has initiated several energy-savings initiatives in an effort to reduce its impact on the environment while strengthening the benefit it provides troops and their families. The Exchange facilities are implementing initiatives to reduce energy consumption in new and existing buildings. With more than 3,100 facilities and some 12.2 million authorized shoppers worldwide, the Exchange and its customers’ impact on the environment cannot be overstated.

- Reduce energy operating costs
- Reduce the carbon footprint
- Market energy-efficiency products
The Exchange Sustainability Team reviewed operations, practices, policies and procedures to develop a comprehensive sustainability program. The Exchange recognizes how the company and its associates and customers worldwide impact the environment. We have integrated a corporate responsibility toward positive stewardship in relation to environmentally friendly practices. The directorates are tasked to surpass sustainability measures by incorporating sustainability actions and goals into normal business practice. The energy management team established six sustainability goals to help shape the future of the Exchange as well as the military communities.
